Open Source Filament Recycler
Project Type
Research
Date
April 2023
During the end of my high school senor year i was met with a unique challenge by my makerspace director: develop a open source and easily replicable way of recycling failed 3D prints back into usable filament for 3D printers. As at the time most methods of recycling 3D prints were experimental and extremely costly as a result. I began researching methods that would involve as many off the shelf components as possible. First failed prints would be ran through a standard office shredder. Splitting up large components into small pellets. These pellets could then be ran through a large extruder and respooled into filament. This extruder was developed to use as little custom parts as possible, with the final design using just 2 3D printed supports. While components such as plumbing pipe were used to make up the hot end. A wood auger to drive pellets across the extruder and out of the extrusion nozzle. And a Windshield wiper motor from a truck to spin the auger.
