This project was initiated to replace the complex and failure-prone electronic paddle shifter on an internal combustion Formula SAE vehicle with a lighter, more reliable mechanical alternative. Following multiple design iterations, a single push-pull cable–actuated sequential shifter was developed. Early prototypes were 3D printed to evaluate driver ergonomics, packaging, and mounting geometry. After validation, the final components were water-jetted from plate steel and welded into the chassis. The resulting system provided drivers with precise and consistent control of the gearbox, enabling reliable upshifts and downshifts while eliminating concerns associated with missed or failed electronic shifts.
